During the month of October, Quincy Medical Group (QMG) is recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This month is a time dedicated to bringing awareness to breast cancer and honoring all those who have been impacted by this disease.

QMG Gynecologist Dr. Peter Dureska said breast cancer screening is important in helping detect breast cancer early.

“Women should begin yearly mammograms at the age of 40, or sooner if they have a high-risk family history. Mammograms don’t always pick up everything, and women know their bodies best, so a monthly self-breast exam is also an important tool in detecting breast cancer early,” he explained.
“By doing a self-exam regularly, women get to know how their breasts normally feel so they are aware of any changes.”

Dr. Dureska suggested women begin performing self-breast exams in their twenties. He noted women should perform the exam right after their periods each month. If a woman is in menopause, he said performing a self-exam the same time each month.

For women due for a mammogram, QMG offers same-day, walk-in mammogram appointments. Patients can call (217) 222-6550, ext. 3284, to schedule an appointment or walk-in at a time convenient for them during available hours.

Walk-in mammograms are offered Monday – Friday 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the QMG Women’s Health Center located on the 2nd floor of 1118 Hampshire St. Both traditional and 3D mammograms are available. Patients should check with their insurance providers regarding coverage for a 3D mammogram.
