Dialysis: What is it?

Dialysis is a life-saving treatment that takes over the role of your kidneys when they can no longer function effectively. It removes waste products and extra fluids from your blood through a special machine. There are two main types of dialysis:

  • Hemodialysis (home or in-center): This treatment involves filtering your blood through an artificial kidney (dialyzer) at a clinic or at home, typically for several hours, a few times a week.
  • Peritoneal Dialysis (done at home): This option uses the lining of your abdomen (peritoneum) as a natural filter. A special solution is cycled in and out of your abdominal cavity, carrying away waste products.

We will work with you to determine the most suitable form of dialysis for your individual needs and lifestyle.
