Back pain is one of the most common reasons people go to the doctor or miss work, and it is a leading cause of disability worldwide. Finding the right treatment option is key and in some cases, surgery is needed.

The Neurosurgery team at Quincy Medical Group (QMG) now offers robotic spine surgery to patients living with back conditions and injuries. Dr. Brian Anderson, neurosurgeon with QMG, was the first to perform the surgery locally utilizing the Mazor X Stealth™ Edition Robotic Guidance Platform. This technology utilizes advanced 3D planning, guidance, and visualization providing patients with a less invasive surgical option.

“With the advances in technology we’re not necessarily able to change the surgeries that we do, but we’re able to do them in a much less invasive way, one of which is spine robotics. The system doesn’t do the surgery, it assists me in doing the surgery,” stated Dr. Anderson.

Patients experience more favorable outcomes with robotic spines surgery over traditional spine surgery.  These benefits include shorter surgery time, less pain, and a smoother recovery process

“Patients recover quicker because there’s so much less surgery involved. They feel better, have less pain, and go home much faster,” said Dr. Anderson. “Approximately 50 to 70 % of patients don’t need narcotics at all after spine surgery. This was unheard of only a few years ago. We’re able to use non-narcotic pain management strategies for them.”

Most importantly, the technology allows patients to get back to their daily activities sooner.

“It’s a great technology that gets patients mobilized and gets them back home and back to work sooner,” Dr. Anderson noted.
