While pursuing a career in medicine, Dr. Abraham Sheffield was interested in a variety of different specialties, but it was Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, commonly known as Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) that ultimately caught his interest. “I really enjoy the broad spectrum of ENT. We care for patients from newborns to older adults, and treat all different types of diseases, both with medication and surgery.” This clinical interest was enhanced by his 4 ½ years of PhD thesis research related to the genetics of hearing loss.
Although he loves all aspects of his job, Dr. Sheffield found a particular passion in providing care for children with complex medical and surgical issues leading him to pursue subspecialty training in pediatric ENT. “In children, we can have a great impact on overall quality of life by doing small things. If we intervene early, we can make a big difference that improves the rest of their life.”
No matter the age of his patients, he wants to assure those in his care that he’ll work to provide the best possible outcome. “I want every patient, no matter what their concern might be, to feel that I have cared for them, focused on them as individuals, and provided them with answers to their questions and the excellent medical care and answers to their questions.”
Dr. Sheffield loves spending time with his wife and three young children. He enjoys basketball, cycling, serving in his church, and baking – especially birthday cakes for his family!
Dr. Sheffield completed his medical degree, doctorate in Genetics, residency in Otolaryngology, and fellowship in Pediatric Otolaryngology at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. Prior to this, he graduated from Brigham Young University in Provo, UT with a major in Japanese. Dr. Sheffield is excited to move back to Illinois, the state where he was born.
